Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and daughter of Chinese immigrants, Jenny has devoted her career to public service and social change.
Lam is a member of the San Francisco Board of Education. After being appointed, Jenny was elected in November 2019, to continue serving as Commissioner on the Board of Education. She brings a student-first approach to her work that is informed by her being a public school parent.
Lam is an experienced community advocate and education leader. Previously, she was State Engagement Manager at the national organization, Education Superhighway – bringing high speed internet, technology infrastructure to public schools across the country.
For over two decades, Lam has served in a number of executive leadership positions with nonprofit organizations, including Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) in San Francisco where she led education initiatives and worked to expand civil and political rights for immigrant youth and families.
She lives in the Diamond Heights neighborhood with her husband and two children, both of whom attend San Francisco public schools.
Commissioner Lam is the chair of the Ad Hoc Personnel Matters, Labor Relations, and Affordability committee.
