Smarter Tests & Old Artifacts - Highlights for January 20-26, 2015

Highlights

The old “fill in the bubble” tests have left SFUSD classrooms and are being replaced by “Smarter Balanced Assessments,” which align with the new Common Core State Standards. These assessments will be taken on computers, and students will be asked to explain their answers, write more and even draw graphs. The assessments will not only accurately reflect what students have learned, but also deliver test results more quickly. SFUSD families are invited to spend an evening taking a sample test themselves to see the new assessments in action, get a feel for what their children will be taking in the spring, and learn more about the new tests from SFUSD teachers and staff.

When:  Thursday, January 22 / 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Where:  727 Golden Gate Ave.

Ida B. Wells High School and the National Park Service are partnering for an archeology project at Sutro Heights.  Continuing the work their classmates did a few years ago--sifting through soil for artifacts where Adolph Sutro’s house once stood--this year’s seniors will now excavate the area where Sutro’s staff lived. The students’ work will become part of the historic information the National Park Service is developing about the Land's End community in the late 19th century. The project is part of the National Park Foundation’s Park Stewards program, which works with high schools to encourage a deeper connection and sense of stewardship for their national parks through service learning projects that align with state academic standards.

When:  Friday, January 23 / 9:45 - 11: 00 a.m.

Where: Parking lot across the street from Merrie Way Visitor Center / 680 Point Lobos Ave.
