Students perform with world-famous string quartet
Dozens of students from the orchestras of Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, Lowell High School and George Washington High School will rehearse together on the eve of their collaboration with San Francisco's Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet. The concert at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on January 30 at 7:30 p.m. will present works from Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, the Kronos Performing Arts Association's education project that is commissioning the first learning library of contemporary repertoire for string quartet. This is the second year that SFUSD students have collaborated with the world-famous string quartet in a community concert.

High schoolers pickle and preserve
John O’Connell High School students in the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA)’s Foodwise Teens Program will learn how to preserve and pickle vegetables and herbs, make canned goods and other products to sell at farmers markets. The program aims to provide students with hands-on career experience in gardening and cooking to learn about sustainability and running a successful business with advice from local farmers, food entrepreneurs, and other experts while gaining a greater understanding of the food system.

Getting a head start on careers
From architecture and engineering, to culinary arts and entrepreneurship, to game design and environmental science, the 3,864 SFUSD high school students enrolled in College & Career Pathways are getting an early start. Students and teachers from all 42 College & Career Pathways on 13 high school campuses will highlight their work at this annual showcase. These multi-year pathways prepare students for different careers through real-world project-based and work-based learning.

Preparing students with learning supports for life after high school
SFUSD is holding its first district-wide college and career fair event for students with learning supports and their families. Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews will welcome students and families to the fair and participants will hear from keynote speaker, UC Davis Dean of the School of Education Dr. Lauren Lindstrom. The day will also include a panel of parents, educators, and students, multiple workshops, and a full college and career fair with post-secondary institutions, city organizations, and support agencies.
