Food, Art & Money: Highlights for March 3-9, 2015

Highlights

Since skipping the first meal of the day can make it difficult for students to focus on learning, SFUSD is finding creative approaches to get food into kids' bellies. This week is National School Breakfast Week, and the students at Marshall High, the first high school to offer Breakfast for All, are eating school breakfast at nearly double the rate compared to when the program began earlier this year. Since ramping up their Breakfast for All programs, participating elementary schools went from an average of 22 percent eating breakfast at school to 90 percent. High schools jumped from 12 percent participation to 50 percent. Breakfast for All - where students can eat the meal during the first part of their first class of the day - is just one of three breakfast programs expanding across SFUSD.

When: Thursday, March 5 / 8:00 - 8:30 a.m.

Where: Marshall HS / 45 Conkling St.

Contrary to what some may think, students in SFUSD are getting a well-rounded arts education, and the SFUSD Youth Arts Festival is an annual show for the public to see the creative and artistic work happening in our schools. The nine-day celebration displays many disciplines of art, from oil painting to sculpture to dance to short fiction. This year's festival will feature student dancers from Cesar Chavez, John Muir and Longfellow Elementary Schools, and the Dreamcatcher awards to staff and community supporters of SFUSD arts will be presented. The festival is free.

When: Dance performances / Thursday, March 5 / 10:45-11:45 a.m.  Dreamcatcher awards / Thursday, March 5 / 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.Where:
Asian Arts Museum / 200 Larkin St.

Approximately 800 adults and a handful of youth will show up at school this Saturday morning. That's because School Site Councils, which are made up of family members, teachers, principals, and students, are getting up to speed on local, state and federal budget allocations, reflecting on the academic and emotional well-being of students at their school, and building a budget that meets student needs. The morning starts with a presentation by district leaders, who will explain SFUSD's priorities, programs and services for next year. Details of the new budget will be laid out, and then school groups will head to classrooms to begin building their school site plans.

When: Saturday, March 7 /call for times

Where: Everett MS / 450 Church St.
