Out of harm's way & leading in green: Highlights for March 21-27, 2017
San Francisco’s Muni and Emergency Management departments have been upgrading signage along the city’s tsunami zones, and now it’s time to remind citizens where to go if a tsunami is coming. More than a hundred Marina Middle School students will be demonstrating how to follow the signs to their neighborhood tsunami shelter, which happens to be their very own school. They will be joined by Police Chief Scott and Fire Chief Hayes-White for the walk, then treated to an emergency preparedness fair at their school with the Red Cross, Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT), the police and fire departments, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services.

In recent years, SFUSD has been busy being green. It has transformed how it designs, constructs and modernizes its buildings so that it will be a carbon neutral district by the year 2040. It has also been working with the SFPUC to replace gas boilers with heat pumps and is also reducing water usage by using rainwater for toilet flushing. On the transportation side, new vehicles will be emissions-free by 2020. In fact, since 2008, SFUSD has been able to reduce its Energy Use Index by a third, natural gas use by almost half, and water use by almost a third, all at little to no additional cost. For all of these efforts and more, the Green Schools National Network and the Center for Green Schools Council are recognizing SFUSD as one of the 2017 “Best of Green Schools.” SFUSD will be receiving the award this week.
