Promoting healthy hearts & hospitality: Highlights for April 25 - May 1, 2017

Highlights

SF Giants World Series Champion pitcher George Kontos will be taking part in an annual year-end celebration with students at Lafayette Elementary, planned by student athletes in the Washington High AIMS (Athletes in Math Succeed) program. Kontos, a Northwestern economics graduate, will visit with students and take part in an assembly that inspires kids to speak up on someone's behalf when they are bullied. Washington High's AIMS program encourages high school athletes to take advanced math and mentor elementary students from Lafayette.

Up to a thousand fourth graders will take part in an annual 5K run as part of a physical education program to improve cardiovascular endurance through consistent effort and goal-setting. This event is part of a program that helps decrease the risk of heart disease and diabetes while also preparing students for the fitness testing they will do in fifth grade.

 

When:   Wednesday, April 26 / 10:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (opening remarks) and 11:00 (run begins)

Where:  Hellman Hollow picnic area /  Golden Gate Park

Thousands of high school seniors in career academies and pathways will be graduating with a head start in their college studies, relationships with business leaders, and the experience to step into a skilled job right away. To celebrate the completion of their studies, the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AoHT) students will be hosted by the Fairmont Hotel. A number of students will be awarded cash scholarships, thanks to Kim Martinson and the Transportation Management Association of San Francisco. AoHT is supported by its advisory board members and industry partners, including the Hotel Council of San Francisco.
