Highlights May 13 - 17, 2019: Former SF Giants player inspires students; Building a tiny house with tradespeople; Students get creative for Arts Showcase and school food
Meeting a role model can have a profound impact on students, which those in Washington High’s Athletes in Math Succeed (AIMS) program will experience firsthand when they get a visit from former San Francisco Giants player Jeremy Affeldt, who pursued his dreams all the way to the Major Leagues. Founded in 2006, AIMS inspires high school student athletes to undertake advanced math and to serve in supportive friendships with younger students to become positive adult leaders in their communities. Affeldt will speak with students about the importance of being a student leader and serving their community.

More than 50 John O’Connell High School students in the Construction and Environmental Technologies Pathway are spending the week working with local tradespeople from Webcor, GCI, Turner and Nibbi Bros. to learn what a career in construction is like on a daily basis. Students will install drywall and exterior sheathing on a tiny house, and build portable roof structures, which will later be used to show how to mount solar panels. The Construction Pathway is one of over 40 College and Career pathways in SFUSD in which students participate in a 2-3 year course sequence with an emphasis on one industry. Course offerings are aligned to local workforce needs, like construction, and accelerate students’ preparedness for college and career.

Students from Bret Harte, Malcolm X Academy, Dr. Charles Drew, and Dr. George Washington Carver elementary schools and Willie Brown Middle School will display their talents through creative expression for the 4th annual Bayview Arts Showcase. The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA)-hosted event will include choir, ukulele, steel pan, and hip hop dance performances along with a joint wind and string instrument performance by students from the four schools. Student artwork will also be on display. The goal of the VAPA program is to provide access and equity in arts education for every SFUSD student, at every school, during each curricular day.

While students receive food for thought in the classroom, some students will create food for show at the SFUSD School Food Advisory Showcase. The annual Student Nutrition Services (SNS) event will feature 18 student fellows from high schools across the district as they present ideas they have developed for building a student-centered school food system over the course of a semester. The SFA's goal is to integrate student voice into the decisions made by SNS and increase student satisfaction and overall participation in school meal programs.
