Fun farewells & little grads: Highlights for May 23 - 26, 2017

Highlights

The Unity Project, a seven-foot circular flower arrangement comprised of vibrant ceramic flowers made by 600 students, will be on display this week. The project began in November 2016 in response to the negative political climate of the presidential campaign and is meant to symbolize strength in diversity. Each student at the school, along with family members and staff, created a flower. This large-scale community art installation was led by Spark Ceramics, in collaboration with the Buena Vista Horace Mann Art Department and parent community and funded by the Philanthropic Ventures Foundation.

When:  Tuesday, May 23 / 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Where:  Buena Vista Horace Mann / 3351 23rd St.

As nearly three thousand graduating seniors hand in their term papers, put on caps and gowns and accept their diplomas, six students will be getting one more thing this week—the Superintendent’s 21st Century Award. Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews will be handing out a $1,600 scholarship that honors the young men and women who exemplify an aspect of the district’s Vision 2025 Graduate Profile: ready to think, learn and grow; ready for career and life; ready to tackle a changing world; ready to lead; ready to create; and ready to be your best.

When:   Tuesday, May 23 / 5:45-6:15 p.m.

Where:  555 Franklin St. / Lobby

Argonne Elementary always felt a little empty after the fifth graders left, so the school started a farewell walk tradition so every student in the school can say goodbye. At the appointed time, students and staff will line the school hallways to greet the fifth grade class as they walk through the school and get hugs, high fives and best wishes from teachers and younger schoolmates.

When:   Thursday, May 25 / 2:00 - 2:15 p.m. (be on time!)

Where:  Argonne ES / 680 18th Ave.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cute alert! Kindergartners at Spring Valley Elementary will be donning caps and gowns and ‘graduating’ from kindergarten. The ceremony begins with a traditional Chinese dance performance, and then the pomp and circumstance begins. Spring Valley, founded in 1852, is the oldest school in California, and its name refers to the underground springs found in the area. Some famous alumni include Lotta Crabtree, Cyril Magnin, Hank Luisetti, Judge Leonard Louie, and Jascha Heifetz.

When:   Friday, May 26 / 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.

Where: Spring Valley ES / 1451 Jackson St.

Highlights will return on the first day of the school year, Monday, August 21, 2017
