Incoming Sixth-Graders Finish “Middle School Boot Camp” with Olympic-Style Obstacle Course
WHAT: School may be out, but more than 1,800 SFUSD incoming sixth-graders went straight to their new middle school this week to learn the ropes for success in sixth grade and beyond.
Students at Francisco Middle School will be taking part in an especially invigorating final obstacle course to review what they’ve learned.

WHY: Fifth-graders face a lot as they transition to middle school: making new friends, homework from six different teachers, and managing school lockers.
For approximately 1,800 soon-to-be sixth-graders, many of these worries have been alleviated this week during the district's Step Up program, a weeklong “boot camp” to learn their way around school, meet teachers, find bathrooms and learn the ins and outs of middle school life.
This is the fourth year of SFUSD’s Step Up program, which is offered at every district middle school.
AUDIO/VISUAL: Approximately 100 students racing through an obstacle course that includes the school cheer, sorting recycling and composting correctly, and quickly opening a combination lock.
