WHY

The need for STEM professionals is among the nation’s fastest growing workforce demands, although students of color -- particularly African American students -- are often under-represented in these fields. The Black Star Rising Summer Program, a product of SFUSD’s African American Achievement & Leadership Initiative, aims to disrupt the opportunity gap for African American students, including in STEM education.

ABOUT BLACK STAR RISING SUMMER PROGRAM

Regina Wallace-Jones, who currently works as Head of Operations and Chief of Staff at eBay and previously worked as Head of Security Operations at Facebook, will speak to students about following their dreams and overcoming the odds to succeed in their chosen career path.

Now in its second year, SFUSD's Black Star Rising Summer Program aims to increase African American student exposure to STEM and prepare incoming high school freshmen to stay on track for graduation. After three weeks in class, the students transition to a five-week internship, where they will focus on STEM-based group projects.
