SFUSD expands program to teach reading habits to families in effort to close literacy gap

Media Advisory

WHAT

SFUSD has partnered with Springboard Collaborative, a national nonprofit created to close the reading achievement gap for low-income students by leveraging the capacity of families to support reading habits at home during summer recess. This summer, SFUSD is expanding the five-week summer intervention program across eight priority schools that will serve almost 800 kindergarten to fourth grade children and their families.

WHEN/WHERE

Wednesday, July 18 / 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Visitacion Valley Elementary School / 55 Schwerin Street

Media, please RSVP to Laura Dudnick at dudnickl@sfusd.edu

WHY

Like many other school districts across the nation, SFUSD has long faced a persistent gap in student performance between demographic subgroups, and eliminating that gap is a top priority for the district. Building on its success as a pilot at one SFUSD school in the Bayview last summer, this program aims to close the literacy gap by coaching teachers, training family members, and cultivating reading habits.

AUDIO/VISUAL

A parent-student reading workshop will showcase family members learning and reading side-by-side with their children under the guidance of the classroom teacher. After teachers provide a quick introduction of the day's reading strategy, family members will practice the reading technique together with their child. Selected family members will be available for interviews to discuss their experiences in the summer program.

ABOUT SPRINGBOARD

Founded in Philadelphia in 2011, Springboard expanded to the Bay Area in 2015 in partnership with Oakland Unified and Education For Change, and with philanthropic funding from the Greenlight Fund, Rogers Family and Kenneth Rainin Foundations.
