Statement from Superintendent Carranza in Honor of Rosario Anaya

August 7, 2015 (San Francisco)—Ms. Rosario Anaya led the way for so many women and Latin Americans here in San Francisco, providing not only excellent leadership, but also serving as a role model as the first Latina elected to public office in San Francisco. Her work in service to our community was extensive and touched many lives.

Ms. Rosario Anaya was originally appointed to the San Francisco Board of Education by Mayor George Moscone. Subsequently, she was the first Latin American woman elected to public office in 1978. She was re-elected in 1982 and 1986, each time elected with the highest number of votes. She served twice as School Board President. Ms. Anaya served on the Board of the Council of Great City Schools and was Vice President of the National Hispanic School Board Members Association. She was also a workshop facilitator for the National and California School Board Associations, and an appointee to the State Education Innovation and Planning Commission as well as the State Superintendent's Council on Hispanic Affairs.
