Media Advisory: First Day of School Visits: Community Building Kicks Off New Year; Middle Grades Redesign on Display

WHAT

Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews, Mayor London Breed and other elected officials will greet students returning to class as they begin the new year, and celebrate innovative approaches to the middle school experience.

WHEN

Monday, August 19 / 8:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.

WHERE

8:30 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. - Starr King Elementary School / 1215 Carolina St.
(Enter on Coral Road)

Community building is key at Starr King, where students start their day with a school-wide dance party and peace builder pledge. Principal Darlene Martin helps integrate students in the Mandarin immersion program and general education. Throughout the year, students hold their own farmers markets and publish their own books, among other activities that help strengthen their school community.

10 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. - Roosevelt Middle School / 860 Arguello Blvd.

In order to expand access to arts, computer science, health and world languages for all middle grade students, SFUSD is engaged in a multi-year process to reimagine how the middle grades are taught. Roosevelt Middle School is one of two schools to begin rolling out the middle grades redesign (grades 6-8), which includes expanded access to electives (like robotics and drama), deeper learning and additional professional collaboration time for teachers.

Please note that other school sites are not hosting media on the first day of school.
