Seeding, watering & growing teachers: Highlights for September 22-28, 2015

Press release

Sherman Elementary will take advantage of the weather system predicted this winter. With its new cistern, the school garden will be able to capture, store and use the water as needed. Students there are ready to talk about their newest addition to Sherman’s green schoolyard and show visitors how it works. SFUSD’s green schoolyards are designed by each school’s community, and 25 SFUSD schools now have cisterns. Sherman students, along with thousands of other SFUSD students, work with Education Outside corps members, who help maintain and use the gardens as outdoor science classrooms.

When: Tuesday, September 22 / 1:00-1:40 p.m.
Where: Sherman ES / 1651 Union St.

Urban farmers are popping up everywhere these days, and SFUSD has added its second Urban Agriculture class at The Academy-SF as part of a two-year program for 11th and 12th graders. Students are earning a science credit toward graduation while studying all aspects of urban agriculture. This week, students will be out at the site’s large school farm to conduct a scientific experiment where they plant seeds in a variety of soil types. The curriculum for this class is drawn from and crafted in close collaboration with teacher Rachel Vigil, who founded and leads the Urban Agriculture class at Mission High.

When: Thursday, September 24 /10:45-11:45 a.m.
Where: The Academy-SF High / 555 Portola Ave.

Elizabeth Reiff is a new teacher at SFUSD, but she’s not new to the SFUSD community. Starting out as a founding Education Outside Corps member in 2011, Reiff taught science to students at E.R. Taylor in its own schoolyard garden. After a three-year stint at the school, Reiff knew she wanted to be a full-time science teacher. Now, with teaching credential in hand, Reiff teaches 7th grade math and science. Though she’s in the classroom now, she hasn’t lost her passion for teaching science in the outdoors—she’s already created an elective called “Eco Action.”

Call for details.
