Highlights

More than 3,000 SFUSD middle school students will be treated to a free outdoor concert on the opening day of the 15th annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Philanthropist, community leader and banjo player Warren Hellman founded the San Francisco tradition, including this special program for youth. Students will hear the banjo stylings and close vocal harmonies of the group PMW, and there will be visual tricks performed by sword swallowers, magicians and clowns from Circus Quirkus.

When: Friday, Oct. 2 / 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Where: Golden Gate Park / Hellman Hollow, Lindley and Marx Meadows

Alice Fong Yu Alternative School, the nation's first Chinese immersion public school, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and a host of dignitaries will be coming by to congratulate the school and join the fun. Principal Liana Szeto will welcome California State Assemblymember Phil Ting; President of the Board of Supervisors London Breed; Supervisor Norman Yee; and President Emily Murase, Vice President Matt Haney and Commissioner Sandra Lee-Fewer from the SF Board of Education. Guests will enjoy food & beverages, carnival games, and gu zheng, percussion, and Chinese folk dance performances by students.

When:   Saturday, Oct. 3 / 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. (lion dance and speakers); 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (festival)

Abraham Lincoln High School was founded 75 years ago, and the school’s students, staff and alumni are going all out to celebrate with a classic old car show, special rooms dedicated to each decade at the school, a wall of fame, and a carnival for both kids and adults. Thousands of current school community members and alumni are expected to come together for this all-day event & fundraiser.

When:  Saturday, Oct. 3 (see special events below)

1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. / Little Theater
Lincoln alum and Sunset author Lorri Ungaretti will give a history of the neighborhood around Lincoln High School encompassing the past 75 years.

3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. / “Decade Rooms” Open (complete with DJs spinning tunes of the era)
40s-50s:  Hino Gardens
60s-70s:  North Gym, ft. DJ Willie Adams
80s-90s: JROTC Parking Lot, ft. DJ James Lau
00s-10s:  NB Courtyard, ft. DJ Alex Nazzal
