"Walk to school & save for college": Highlights for October 3 - 9, 2017

Highlights

It’s time for the annual Walk and Roll to School Day, and this year the Vision Zero Hero will be walking to school with Cleveland Elementary students and their families. Joining them will be Mayor Ed Lee, as well as Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg, who will lead dozens of students in a lively warm-up exercise at the Excelsior “Safe Routes” hub before walking to school. This year, more than 13,000 elementary school students citywide are expected to walk to school to celebrate the day.  The event is organized by Walk San Francisco, which works to make walking in San Francisco safer for everyone as part of the SF Safe Routes to School Partnership.

WHEN    Wednesday, October 4 / 8:30-8:45 a.m.

WHERE:  Excelsior Playground / 579 Madrid St.

San Francisco’s Kindergarten to College (K2C) is the first universal college savings program in the nation. Created by City Treasurer José Cisneros, San Francisco families now have contributed $2.8 million to their children's accounts, and half of those savings belong to very low income households. This year more than 30,000 K-5 students will have K2C savings accounts for college. Cisneros, Superintendent Vincent Matthews, and Supervisor Malia Cohen are co-hosting a celebration of the program.

WHEN:   Friday, October 6 / 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Bayview Opera House / 4705 3rd St.

It may be hard to believe, but it’s already time for high school seniors to start applying to college. The annual SFUSD Senior College Fair will include representatives from more than 80 colleges and universities from the United States and around the world. This includes two-year and community colleges, trade and career technical education schools, and four-year colleges.  Informative workshops for all students will help seniors understand collegiate support resources, financial aid planning and scholarships.

WHEN:   Friday, October 6 / 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

WHERE:  City College of San Francisco campus / 50 Phelan Ave.

SFUSD schools and central office departments will be closed
on Monday, October 9, for Indigenous Peoples Day.
