Health and wellness: Highlights for October 10-16, 2017
Every school day at Lincoln High, up to 70 students visit the school’s Wellness Center. It could be for a vision/hearing screening, first aid, or to talk with someone after having a hard day. And the Wellness staff—which includes the Wellness Coordinator, the Community Health Outreach Worker, a nurse, and two full-time Richmond Area Multi Services mental health clinicians—are there to help. Thanks to a generous donation from Supervisor Katy Tang, Donors Choose, and the school’s alumni association, the center has received upgrades. Supervisor Tang will be on hand to cut the ribbon on the new center.

It’s National School Lunch week, and SFUSD will be celebrating by serving a new menu item, Tomato Curry with Grilled Chicken. While steadily improving school food over the last several years, SFUSD now provides 35,000 meals per day at 115 schools. Elementary students have two entrée choices every day, with at least one being vegetarian. Middle and high school students have four options each day -- and most include some meals made fresh onsite. In its ongoing efforts to encourage healthy eating, SFUSD is also piloting mobile carts and full-meal vending machines, exploring a return to cooking from scratch, and redesigning cafeterias.

Thousands of San Francisco parents will be attending the annual SFUSD Enrollment Fair to check out school options for their children. This fair is a one-stop shop, with all San Francisco’s public schools under one roof. Along with the school tables, there will be workshops to explain transitional kindergarten, language pathways and other program options. The event is packed with principals, teachers, parents, and students who are ready to talk to prospective families about what is special about their school. For many families, this fair is a chance to get to know SFUSD schools for the first time.

Many schools across the United States will participate in Say Something Week, a program created by Sandy Hook Promise, to show students that they can help prevent tragedies and save lives by saying something to a trusted adult. Two parents of students who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012 will be at Lawton K-8 School to talk with sixth- through eighth-graders about the important role young people play in looking out for one another and preventing violence and self-harm. Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook that claimed the lives of 20 first-graders and 6 educators.
