Highlights Nov. 13-16, 2018: High school students test air quality from Camp Fire; Newcomer students celebrate first Thanksgivings

Highlights

The Camp Fire has caused smoky skies throughout the Bay Area for days, and Burton High School Academy of Health Sciences students are taking it upon themselves to find out just what’s in the air. Students are testing particulate matter in the air by placing Petri dishes with Vaseline outside to collect particulate matter data. After analyzing the data under a microscope, they will present their findings.

WHEN: Wednesday, November 14 / 11:35 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.

WHERE: Burton High School / 400 Mansell Street

-------------------------------

Students at the Edwin and Anita Lee Newcomer School will get their first taste of a traditional Thanksgiving meal courtesy of the Hilton San Francisco Financial District Hotel. Following a performance by students, lunch will be served. The meal, which will feature oven-baked turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables and dessert, helps welcome newcomer immigrant students and families into the larger school district community.

WHEN: Thursday, November 15 / 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

WHERE: Edwin and Anita Lee Newcomer School / 657 Merchant Street

-------------------------------

Newly-arrived immigrant students at Mission Education Center will celebrate their first Thanksgiving. Dozens of kindergarten through 5th grade students will experience the American tradition for the first time with a feast consisting of turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. This transitional school helps Spanish-speaking students achieve the necessary skills and confidence to succeed as they transfer to comprehensive schools after one year.

WHEN: Friday, November 16 / 12:15 - 1:15 p.m.

WHERE: Mission Education Center / 1670 Noe Street
