WHY
When the school opened in 1969, it was called "Chinese Education Center." Last year the school was renamed the "Edwin and Anita Lee Newcomer School," in honor of the late Mayor Ed Lee, the City’s first Chinese American mayor, and his wife, Anita. The 50th anniversary of the school marks a significant milestone for the Chinese American community here in San Francisco.
