SFUSD’s graduation rate increases to 85.5%
San Francisco (November 15, 2018) - The San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) graduation rate for the 2017-18 school year rose to 85.5% and many student subgroups also increased. SFUSD’s overall rate is an improvement from the 2016-17 school year, when the graduation rate was 84.4%.
The graduation rate was released Thursday by the California Department of Education (CDE) as part of the 2017-18 Cohort Outcome Data.
For African American students, the graduation rate increased to 77.1%, from 76.8% the previous school year, and it rose from 70.3% to 73.8% for Latino students. American Indian students had a graduation rate of 83.3%, up from 78.6%, and FIlipino students increased from 89% to 89.6%. Pacific Islander students had a graduation rate of 82.6%, up from 79.6%.
Other subgroups also saw increases. English learners had a graduation rate of 68.2%; homeless youth had a graduation rate of 76.7%; students with disabilities a rate of 69.7%; and socioeconomically disadvantaged students had a rate of 84%.
“We are pleased to see an increase in the graduation rate for the entire district, as well as among many of our highest need students, but we know there is more work to do,” Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews said. “We will continue to strive for a 100% graduation rate for every student and to equip each student with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century.”
The associated dropout rate for SFUSD decreased from 8.2% to 7%, and that rate also decreased for most subgroups.
The CDE also released Chronic absenteeism and suspension rates for the 2017-18 Cohort. SFUSD’s chronic absenteeism rate for 2017-18 was 13.4%, and the suspension rate was 1.9%.
