SFUSD shares original math curriculum with the world
San Francisco (December 20, 2018) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has publicly released its K-5 Elementary Math Core Curriculum under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY).
Sharing SFUSD’s math curriculum on Creative Commons marks the first time a large, urban school district in the U.S. has produced and shared its own open educational resources (OER). The open license permits anyone to copy, revise, remix and distribute the curriculum, as long as SFUSD is credited for the original creation.
The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum is a comprehensive, coherent curriculum for grades K–5. The SFUSD Math Core Curriculum is the district-supported curriculum for TK through Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 + Precalculus. Since the 2014–15 school year, all SFUSD schools have been using the Core Curriculum Units as the basis for their math program.
“This task-based curriculum is designed to provide all students with access and rigor. ‘Access’ means that all students have a way to participate in the learning experience, and use their strengths to be successful in each math task. ‘Rigor’ means that all students are challenged and deeply learning grade level math objectives. We hope that sharing our curriculum allows for more schools to offer equitable lessons that build on student’s strengths,” said Brent Stephens, Chief Academic Officer at SFUSD.
The math core curriculum features support for social-emotional learning (SEL) and building math class culture; it includes embedded universal design supports targeted at English Language learners and students with learning differences or diverse learning styles.
These supports start during the first week of instruction, when a teacher works with their class to establish a student-centered, discourse-rich classroom, and are embedded throughout the year. The curriculum includes detailed teacher notes with a multilingual glossary and student materials in English, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.

"By adding the Creative Commons Attribution License to their K-5 math core curriculum, SFUSD is sharing their effective math resources with the worldwide community of elementary math educators.”
SFUSD will continue to share courses under the CC BY license as they are developed and implemented.
