Inclusive Schools Week celebrations began in both classrooms and on the steps of City Hall this week. Since 2012, the San Francisco Unified School District has celebrated this week in recognition of the district’s commitment to provide a supportive and quality education to a diverse student population, including students who may be marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors.  For Inclusive Schools Week, SFUSD Highlights has selected a few fun opportunities to meet some of SFUSD’s amazing students and teachers:

Special Education teacher, Sadie Guthrie, developed a mobile coffee cart program that has become a staple in both the students’ and the community’s weekly routines. Come see how the students get to know the school staff and brighten the hallways at Lawton K-8 during their weekly coffee cart rounds.

When:  Thursday, Dec. 10 / 10:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Ed, a student who receives Special Education services for autism at Mission High, has become a bit of a rock star on campus. He can often be found playing a Beatles number during lunch with his friends during the school’s Best Buddies club, and he plays in the school’s new mariachi band. For the last two years, he has emerged as a leader during Ability Awareness Month, providing presentations on autism and building community through music.

Students at AccessSFUSD: The Arc are holding their holiday sing-along with Superintendent Richard Carranza and State Senator Mark Leno. Access:SFUSD is a community-based program focused on teaching functional life skills to students between the ages of 18 to 22 who receive special education services.

When:    Monday, Dec. 14 / 10:00-11:00 a.m.
