College Savings Bonus & Inclusive Schools: Highlights for December 2-7, 2015

Highlights

San Francisco Treasurer José Cisneros will join Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary students at the school's monthly Honor Assembly where he will award “students of the month” with an additional $10 deposit into their Kindergarten to College (K2C) savings accounts.  All Cobb students selected as Student of the Month this year will receive a certificate and the $10 scholarship.  K2C was created by the San Francisco Office of Financial Empowerment in 2010, and is the first publicly funded universal children's college savings account program in the U.S.  The City and SFUSD are working to help every public school family save for their child's college education because studies have shown that students with college savings accounts in their own names are several times more likely to make it to college.

When:    Friday, Dec. 4 / 9:00-9:30 a.m.

Where:   Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary / 2725 California St.

The annual Inclusive Schools Week celebrations begin in both classrooms and on the steps of City Hall next week. A kickoff celebration features an exhibition soccer game with teams from Lowell and Galileo High Schools comprised of students who receive special education services and students who don’t. Since 2012, SFUSD has celebrated the progress it is making to provide a supportive and quality education to a diverse student population, including students who may be marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference and other factors.  Inclusive Schools Week highlights the many ways inclusion is happening and provides opportunities for educators, students and parents to discuss what more can be done to ensure that schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.

When:    Monday, Dec. 7 / 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Where:   City Hall / Polk St. steps and Civic Center Park (adjacent to the steps)
