Oral health for sixth graders & growing teachers: Highlights for Feb. 9-15, 2016

Highlights

Students at Willie Brown Jr. Middle School will be smiling a little brighter thanks to free dental exams being offered this week at the school. The entire sixth grade will undergo the screenings. The event promotes February’s National Oral Health Month. Staff from the San Francisco Department of Public Health will conduct the exams and identify students who need follow-up care and those who are candidates for receiving sealants at no cost. Students who need additional care will be referred to dentists and other community resources. Dental screenings at middle schools are rare; SFUSD only routinely provides dental screenings for kindergartners. In addition, Willie Brown is the only SFUSD middle school to house an onsite medical clinic.

When: Tuesday, Feb. 9 / 10:00-11 a.m.

Where: Willie Brown Middle School / 2055 Silver Ave.

Lowell HS physical education teacher Juan Lopez is known for telling his students to push themselves harder and improve their sports skills. Then one day, he decided to take his own advice and, after a lot of work, is now a National Board Certified teacher. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve this certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment, and peer review. Applicants build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videos of their teaching, and a thorough analysis of their work. The SF Board of Education will be congratulating Juan, along with 28 others who have achieved or renewed their certification, at the board meeting this week. There are 254 National Board Certified teachers now working in SFUSD, and the district is growing the number of teachers with this distinction at a faster rate than the national average.

When:   Tuesday, Feb. 9, 5:30-6:00 p.m.

Where:  555 Franklin St. / lobby
