SFUSD Hiring More Substitute Teachers

SFUSD Hiring More Substitute Teachers

Press Release

San Francisco (March 30, 2021) - As part of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)’s preparation to gradually return students to in-person learning beginning on April 12, 2021, and to continue providing distance learning, the district is working to recruit and hire more substitute teachers.

SFUSD has sent 2,085 assignment letters to teachers and paraeducators who are being asked to return to in-person learning in the first three waves of schools. PK-5 teachers and paraeducators who are at “increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 or who cannot safely distance from household contacts who belong to a group at increased risk” can request an accommodation to work remotely this spring.

Given early indications that there may be a shortage of staff who are able to work in person at this time, the district is surveying substitute teachers about their availability and working to recruit and hire additional substitutes. SFUSD is hiring substitute teachers and paraeducators for long-term, in-person placements to work in classrooms for the duration of the school year. These substitutes will partner with teachers and paras who will continue to provide instruction from home.

The district is also hiring for substitute teachers who are interested in distance learning assignments, as well as one off in-person substitute positions. People may apply to become part of SFUSD’s on-call substitute pool at any time. The application for the long-term substitute teaching position can be found HERE and is due by Friday, April 2. Applications for substitute paraeducator (teacher assistant) opportunities can be found HERE.

About SFUSD

SFUSD is the seventh largest school district in California, educating over 56,000 preK-12 students every year. San Francisco is both a city and a county; therefore, SFUSD administers both the school district and the San Francisco County Office of Education (COE). This makes SFUSD a “single district county.”
