SFUSD & UESF Announce Tentative Successor Contract Agreement

Includes $4,000 Bonus and Increased Rates for Substitutes

San Francisco, CA (January 29, 2022) – The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) have reached a tentative agreement in relation to the collective bargaining agreement that expired June 30, 2020. The new tentative agreement expires June 30, 2023. 

United Educators of San Francisco President Cassondra Curiel said, “Given all of the struggles educators have been through over the past two years, we are relieved that we could get one-time compensation directly to all members, as well as a much needed increase in substitute pay. We are fighting for the schools our students deserve in a particularly challenging period. This is a step in the right direction.”

The agreement creates recruitment and retention incentives for educators and will help stabilize staffing at SFUSD. If the tentative agreement is approved, UESF teachers and paraeducators will receive two one-time bonuses of $2,000; one in June of 2022 and one in November of 2022. In addition, daily rates for substitute teachers and paraeducators will increase substantially to promote higher rates of classroom coverage. 

Sabbaticals will be suspended for the 2022-2023 school year and will be limited during the 2023-2024 school year to help reduce the number of teacher vacancies. Finally, the additional preparation period given to high school teachers who teach Advanced Placement (AP) courses will be suspended during the 2022-2023 school year. This will not impact the number of AP courses offered by SFUSD and teachers who teach AP classes will still have a prep period. Financial savings created by suspending sabbaticals and the additional prep for AP will help pay for the agreement. 

The tentative agreement also includes changes that comply with statutory requirements around mandated child abuse reporter training and the probationary period for new paraeducators, and allows either party to reopen the contract on or after July 1, 2022. 

UESF members will vote on the tentative agreement over the next few days and, pending ratification by UESF, the SF Board of Education will vote on the agreement at a regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting in February.
