Dear SFUSD Community,
Our public schools should be places where we harness the power of education to unlock each and every student’s potential. We recognize that the last few months have been filled with uncertainty and doubt. There have been instances when SFUSD has fallen short and this is not acceptable. We are writing to share the next steps to get the district back on track.
The San Francisco Board of Education is committed to working with SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne as a governance team to tackle the significant challenges facing the school district. The next few months will be extremely consequential for SF public schools. The San Francisco Board of Education outlined four priorities for Superintendent Wayne:
- Balance its budget and eliminate the structural deficit
- Rehabilitate its fiscal and operation systems
- Extend the longevity of the school bond program
- Rightsize SFUSD’s school portfolio with fewer but better schools
We are committed to stabilizing the district, meeting our ambitious goals to improve student outcomes, and honoring our guardrails. In order to do so, we must work together to make tough decisions and deliver results for our students.
As Superintendent, I agree that these priorities are critical to our success, and I am ready to demonstrate effective leadership and make progress in these areas. I will be accountable to the Board of Education, which represents the vision and values of our community.
These are big undertakings and we cannot do this alone. As Board President, I have reached out to Mayor London Breed who has offered to provide a team of experts and resources to help the Superintendent stabilize the district. Mayor Breed’s leadership has been instrumental to the SFUSD community during various crises. We are grateful for her support and are ready to partner.
SFUSD will also communicate in a timely, transparent, and accessible manner when information becomes available. To receive upcoming announcements, please visit ParentVue (families) or EMPowerSF (employees) to update your contact information.
Together, we can chart a path forward. Thank you.
In community,
Matt Alexander, President, SF Board of Education
Dr. Matt Wayne, SFUSD Superintendent
