District Offers Signing Bonuses for Special Education Teachers and Aides

Press Release

With the hope of attracting more applicants to fill 70 current openings for Special Education teachers and 90 openings for Special Education Instructional Aides, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is offering signing bonuses for the first time in recent history.

“California is facing a significant teacher shortage, and that means we have unprecedented competition for credentialed teachers across the state,” says Superintendent Richard A. Carranza.

"We are dedicated to ensuring that our students have the best professionals working with them in our classrooms. People want to teach in San Francisco public schools but the cost of living in the Bay Area weighs heavy on their decision making. We’re doing what we can within our means to recruit great educators.”

All credentialed Special Education teachers, School Psychologists, Behavior Analysts and Speech and Language Pathologists hired by SFUSD for the 2016-2017 school year will be paid a $4,000 bonus. All current general education teachers who hold a valid special education credential and who, on or before August 12, 2016, accept an assignment as a Special Education teacher for the 2016-17 school year, may also be paid a $4,000 bonus.

Current general education teachers who do not yet hold a Special Education credential but who, on or before January 1, 2017, provide verification of enrollment in a Special Education credentialing program for the 2016-17 school year and accept assignment as a Special Education teacher for the 2016-17 school year, will be paid up to a $2,000 bonus.

In addition, newly hired teachers who do not yet hold a Special Education credential but who, on or before January 1, 2017, provide verification of enrollment in a Special Education credentialing program for the 2016-17 school year and accept assignment as a Special Education teacher for the 2016-17 school year, will be paid up to a $2,000 bonus.

In addition, those teachers who, on or before January 1, 2017, are enrolled in a special education credentialing program and accept assignment as a Special Education teacher for the 2016-17 school year will be entitled to receive up to $1,000 in tuition assistance to earn their special education credential.

Instructional Aides, who are Class Series “S” Special Education paraprofessionals, will be paid up to a $500 signing bonus. All other current paraprofessional employees who, on or before August 12, 2016, qualify and accept assignment as a Class Series “S” Special Education Instructional Aide for the 2016-17 school year will be paid up to a $500 signing bonus.
