Free breakfast for 37,000 students & vaccination updates: Highlights for Aug. 23-29, 2016

Highlights

Starting this school year, 37,000 SFUSD students will get breakfast and lunch for free without having to fill out paperwork. This is because 54 schools are now taking part in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. Being a CEP school means all students at the school do not have to pay for meals. CEP, which is part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, allows schools with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch and  eliminates the burden of collecting household applications to determine eligibility for school meals. SFUSD’s school breakfast and lunch meet—and in some cases exceed&mdsah; USDA guidelines for healthy school meals. Students at Gordon Lau Elementary are in their second week of school and are already enjoying the free meals

In January, state law (SB 277eliminated the Personal Belief Exemption option when it came to immunizing children for school. Ever since 2011, when another state law required all children entering 7th grade to receive the Tdap booster shot, SFUSD has kept all vaccination records up to date and compliant. Now that the school year has begun, school nurses, health workers and other staff are ensuring that students are immunized and their records are updated. The school nurse at Roosevelt Middle spends time during her day to check student records, send notices home, and even make calls to families about updating their child’s immunizations.
