Children’s author, Todd Parr, will be on hand to read to students to help celebrate the donation. In partnership with First Book and SPARK* SF Public Schools, SFUSD is working to equip every kindergarten to fifth-grade classroom with books and tools to provide literacy-rich environments and experiences. Wipro’s gift will put the initiative at the halfway mark.

At Lincoln High this year, the Green Academy’s seniors are figuring out how to get everybody at the school to cut down on natural gas usage. They've completed a survey of the school’s heating system, presented their findings at a recent staff meeting educating their teachers about different heating types, and are finalizing a staff survey of classroom heating issues. Now they are buckling down with experts at SFUSD’s Sustainability office to create a winning strategy to reduce the usage -- and to help earn money for their school. Through SFUSD’s Shared Savings program, schools can earn money if they reduce energy by at least 5 percent. (Schools that participate receive half of the savings back to spend how they need.) Last year, Lincoln earned approximately $5,500. Overall since 2010, SFUSD has reduced energy usage by 35 percent and water usage by 18 percent.

When: Wednesday, Sept. 28 / 9:00-9:45 a.m.

Where: Lincoln HS / 162 24th Ave.

Approximately 3,000 SFUSD middle school students will be treated to a free outdoor concert on the opening day of the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Philanthropist, community leader and banjo player Warren Hellman began the festival years ago, and though he passed away in 2011, the free festival tradition continues. This year the students will hear the banjo stylings and close vocal harmonies of the group PMW, known for its “high-octane hootenanny” sound entertained by Cirkus Quirkus.

When: Friday, Sept. 30 / 10:30-11:30 a.m.
