New Info about Transitional Kindergarten

Posted on December 8, 2021

Dear Parent/Guardian:

If you have a 4 year old child, this email may be of interest to you.

SFUSD is excited to share that we are extending the eligibility age range for children in the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. If your child turns five between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023, they will be eligible for TK next year.

This change was made possible by an education funding bill that passed the California Legislature earlier this year. The bill included a universal transitional kindergarten program for all 4-year-olds. The TK program is expected to roll out beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. It will expand every year until it is available to all 4-year-olds by 2025-2026.

Below is SFUSD’s timeline to rollout the Transitional Kindergarten program by school year and the birth dates of eligibility:

           2022-2023:  Turn 5 between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023

           2023-2024:  Turn 5 between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024

           2024-2025:  Turn 5 between September 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025

           2025-2026:  Turn 5 between September 2, 2025 and September 1, 2026

We have also added new TK school sites to accommodate more students enrolling in TK. You can find the complete list of TK school sites, plus information on how to enroll, at sfusd.edu/tk.

If you need help with applying to TK, please contact our enrollment office at 415-241-6085 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
