The Fall 2021 workshops have concluded. Please check back in Fall 2022 for our next series of community feedback opportunities.
SFUSD is changing our student assignment policy for elementary schools starting in 2024-25. We will be using zones and diversity factors to assign TK-5th grade students. You have an opportunity to influence how these zones and diversity factors are created. Please join us at a workshop to share your input.

Who should attend these workshops?
All are welcome! Current, future and former SFUSD families, community partners and members of the public should join to influence the future of public education in San Francisco.
Anyone who is interested in shaping the new elementary school zones is encouraged to participate. Unless otherwise noted for the specific event, all are welcome!
Why should I attend a workshop?
Because your input matters. New elementary school zones will significantly change how students are assigned to schools in SFUSD. You have an opportunity to shape how those zones are drawn by participating in these workshops.
How do I sign up?
- Please register using this form: bit.ly/SAworkshopsreg. We will email you the meeting link after you register.
- We will be using Zoom. Join from your computer, tablet or smartphone. For help on how to use Zoom, please see this article [link].
- Workshops will be 90 minutes long and we ask that you attend for the entire workshop.
What will I do at a workshop?
At these workshops, we will:
- Share why we are changing the policy, and explain the policy’s goals of diversity, proximity, and predictability.
- Ask for your input to help us draft zones that will be shared for public comment in Spring 2022
- Our workshops are interactive! You will receive information, and we will also ask you to share your thoughts.
What if I need language interpretation or American Sign Language?
Please use the registration form to request interpretation or American Sign Language at the workshops. All written workshop materials will be translated into Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Samoan and posted on our website.
What if I can’t attend any of the workshops at the listed days and times?
We will be adding additional workshop dates soon, so check back regularly! If none of the workshops fit your schedule, you can still register at https://bit.ly/SAworkshopsreg to receive an informational handout, slide deck, and survey to give your input or to ask us questions.

Past Community Workshops
2020 Community Information Sessions
In Spring 2020 SFUSD staff gathered community feedback on the Board’s policy goals and three potential concepts for a new elementary school assignment system. SFUSD conducted this community engagement process in partnership with Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS SF). In total, the Community Engagement Team organized 12 community workshops, 11 meetings with community groups and city agencies, and tabling at 10 locations.
Five key themes came up consistently throughout this engagement.
- Quality Schools: Above all, families want to send their children to high quality schools and expressed that student assignment would not be as important if all schools were considered high quality. Families expressed that resource inequities contribute to unevenness in perceived quality and suggested solutions to distribute resources more equitably.
- Choice: Families recognize that choice can be inequitable and can harm schools that are perceived as being less desirable. At the same time, many families want to be able to choose a school that works for them.
- Distrust: Many African American and Latinx families were distrustful of the process and motivations for redesigning the current student assignment system. Families raised serious concerns that a proximity based assignment system would be unfair and would harm those with the least resources.
- Proximity: All else equal, most families would prefer to send their children to school close to home. However, many felt that school quality is inequitably distributed throughout the city and would not want to send their child to a neighborhood school unless they viewed it as a high quality school.
- Anxiety About Boundaries: Many workshop participants found it difficult to give feedback without knowing what the boundaries would look like.
