Introduction
On Sept. 18, 2022, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) reached a tentative agreement for the 2022-23 school year, which included a 6% raise for teachers and para-educators. This agreement was finalized by the SF Board of Education on October 25, 2022.
Effective July 1, 2022, the salary schedules and daily and hourly rates in Appendix B have been adjusted to reflect a six percent (6%) increase. For Summer School, the foregoing increases shall take effect beginning with the first certificated workday of the summer session in 2023.

Certificated Staff Paid Monthly
How will monthly certificated staff get paid the increase?
The increase will be paid in two ways.
- Your current pay rate will be updated to reflect this 6% increase on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay stub for the current pay period ending Nov. 20, 2022 and moving forward. The 6% increase on your current wages will be included on the line called “Salary” for Current Earnings and should be 6% more than the same line on your October pay statement.
- The 6% increase on your salary between Jul. 21 and Oct. 20 will be paid as one lump sum, which you will see on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay statement if you are on a monthly pay frequency.
You might be wondering why the increase begins Jul. 21, if this salary increase is effective as of Jul. 1. Jul. 21 is the first day of the first pay period for the 2022-23 school year. The Jul. 21 to Oct. 20 increase will appear on your pay statement as “Lump Sum Adjustment” and will include the 6% increase on your base salary as well as other hourly earnings that you earned during this time period. The lump sum of the 6% increase on your base salary has been calculated using the salary at the end of each pay period between Jul. 21 and Oct. 20.
How are the lump sum payments calculated?
To calculate your lump sum, start with your 2022-23 base salary and follow these steps:
- Start with your original 2022 - 2023 salary; you can now find this information in your employee profile in EMPowerSF under “Compensation.” To view your salary before the increase, click on the Clock icon:
- The current “Salary (1000)” is in green, and the previous salary is in strikethrough. In this case, the person’s regular salary from Nov. 9, 2022 going forward is $67,281, and previously (from Aug. 11, 2022), it was $63,473.
- Divide the original salary (in strikethrough) by 11 months to get your original monthly salary payment (or divide by 12 months if you are an ADG employee, Children’s Center Teacher (Job Classifications 07114), or Year-Round Argonne Employee.) For example, $63,473 divided by 11 is equal to $5,770.27.
- For returning employees or employees who were hired before Aug. 20, multiply that monthly salary payment by 3 (for the three pay periods covered by this lump sum: Jul. 21 - Aug. 20, Aug. 21 - Sep. 20, and Sep. 21 - Oct. 20) and proceed to step 6. Using the example above, the total base salary for three pay periods would be $5770.27 x 3 = $17,310.81.
- For employees hired between Aug. 21 and Sep. 20, please follow the same instructions in step #3 but multiply by 2 (for the two pay periods covered by this lump sum: Aug. 21 - Sep. 20, and Sep. 21 - Oct. 20). For employees hired between Sep. 21 and Oct. 20, simply identify your salary for that month and proceed to step 6. Please note that if you only worked part of a month, you are still being paid the 6% increase on your total monthly salary for that month.
- Multiply the total from step #4 OR #5 by 0.06. To continue with our example, $17,310.81 x 0.06 = $1,038.65.
If your lump sum is greater than that calculation, you are also being paid the 6% increase for other hourly earnings (including extended hours or extended days.)
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends or bonuses, or the FWEA or QTEA Add-Ons.
Does the 6% increase apply to stipends, bonuses, or other add-ons?
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends or bonuses or the FWEA or QTEA Add-Ons.
Certificated Staff Paid Bi-Weekly
How will certificated staff paid bi-weekly get paid the increase?
The increase will be paid in two ways:
- Your current salary will be updated to reflect this 6% increase on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay statement for the current pay period starting Nov. 9, 2022 and moving forward. The 6% increase on your current wages will be included on the line called “Salary” for Current Earnings and should be 6% more than the same line on your October pay statement.
- The 6% increase on your salary between Jul. 21 and Nov. 8 will be paid as one lump sum, which you will see on your Dec. 14, 2022 pay statement. If you are an ADG employee, Children’s Center Teacher (Job Classifications 07114), or Year-Round Argonne Employee), your lump sum payment is calculated on your salary between Jul. 5 and Nov. 8.
You might be wondering why Jul. 21 (or July 5 for year-round employees) is the start date if this salary increase is effective as of Jul. 1. Jul. 21 is the first day of the first pay period for the 2022-23 school year. It will appear on your pay statement as “Lump Sum Adjustment” and will include the 6% increase on your base salary as well as other hourly earnings that you earned during this time period. The lump sum of the 6% increase on your base salary has been calculated using the salary at the end of each pay period between Jul. 21 (or Jul. 5 for year-round employees) and Nov. 8.
How are the lump sum payments calculated?
To calculate your lump sum, please follow these steps:
- Start with your original 2022-23 salary; you can now find this information in your employee profile in EMPowerSF under “Compensation.” To view your salary before the increase, click on the Clock icon:
- The current salary (1000) is in green, and the previous salary is in strikethrough. In this case, the person’s regular salary from Nov. 9, 2022 going forward is $64,360, and previously (from Aug. 11, 2022), it was $60,717.
- Divide the original (the strikethrough not the green) Salary (1000) amount by 23 pay periods to get your monthly salary payment. For example, $60,717.00 divided by 23 is equal to $2,639.87.
- Multiply the number of pay periods you have worked during this school year by your bi-weekly salary. To continue with our example, if an employee had worked for 4 pay periods, we would calculate $2,639.87 x 4 = $10,559.48. If an employee worked a portion of a pay period, they would still be paid the 6% increase on the entire pay period.
- Multiply the total from step 10 by 0.06. To continue with our example, $10,559.48 x 0.06 = $633.57
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends or bonuses, or the FWEA or QTEA Add-Ons.
Paraeducator Staff
How will paraeducator staff get paid the increase?
The compensation will be paid out in two ways.
- Your current pay rate will be updated to reflect this 6% increase on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay stub for the current pay period starting Nov. 9, 2022, ending Nov. 22, 2022 and moving forward. The 6% increase on your current wages will be included on the line called “Regular” within Current Earnings and should be 6% more than the rate on your previous pay statement.
- The 6% increase on your salary between Jul. 21 and Nov. 8 will be paid as one lump sum, which you will see on your Dec. 14, 2022 pay statement. It will appear on your pay statement as “Lump Sum Adjustment” and will include the 6% increase on your regular earnings as well as other hourly earnings worked between Jul. 21 and Nov. 8.
How are the lump sum payments calculated?
When you receive your lump sum adjustment on Dec. 14, please use the following steps to calculate your lump sum. Start with your 2022-23 earnings thus far and follow these steps:
- Add together the number on the line called “Regular” within Current Earnings on all of your pay statements starting with the August 24, 2022 statement.
- Multiply that total by 0.06
If your lump sum is greater than that calculation, you are also being paid the 6% increase for other hourly earnings. Some examples include sick, vacation, jury duty, out-of-class, extra hours, and overtime. View a complete and detailed list of hourly and daily rates included in the raise.
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends, bonuses, or the FWEA and QTEA Add-Ons.
Does the 6% increase apply to stipends or bonuses?
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends, bonuses, or the FWEA and QTEA Add-Ons.
Substitute Staff
How will substitute staff get paid the increase?
The compensation will be paid out in two ways.
- Your current daily pay rate will be updated to reflect this 6% increase on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay statement for the current pay period ending Nov. 22, 2022 for staff paid bi-weekly and Nov. 20, 2022 for staff paid monthly, and moving forward. The new daily and hourly sub rates are as follows:
- Step 1: $238.14
- Step 2: $287.57
- EED Hourly Rate: $40.67
- The 6% increase on your salary between Jul. 21 and Oct. 20 will be paid as one lump sum, which you will see on your Nov. 30, 2022 pay statement if you are paid on a monthly pay frequency, and your Dec. 14, 2022 paystub if you are biweekly pay. It will appear on your paystub as “Lump Sum Adjustment” and will include the 6% increase on your earnings.
How are the lump sum payments calculated?
To calculate your lump sum, please follow these steps:
- Add up your total Regular Current Earnings between Aug. 17 and Oct. 20 (monthly) or Nov. 8 (bi-weekly) and multiply by 0.06.
If your lump sum is greater than that calculation, you are also being paid the 6% increase for other hourly earnings (some examples include sick, COVID Sick, HiPotentialSch DTD Assgn, Subteacher Stipend). View a complete and detailed list of hourly and daily rates included in the raise.
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends or bonuses, or the FWEA or QTEA add-ons.
Does the 6% increase apply to stipends or bonuses?
Please note that the 6% increase does not apply to stipends or bonuses, or the FWEA or QTEA add-ons.
