Dawn Rege

High School Science Content Specialist

Dawn joined the STEM team from John O’Connell and Burton High Schools. For the past 14 years she has developed and implemented curriculum for Biology and Honors Biology, Marine Science, Earth Science, Human Physiology, and Health Education. 

Dawn is National Board certified and is trained in data based inquiry, AVID science techniques, and Next Generation Science Standards.  As science chair, she created and facilitated department and school-wide professional development in mastery learning, Common Core integration, expository writing, equitable grading practices, and lesson differentiation to make content accessible and rigorous for all students. 

Always looking for science opportunities for her students, Dawn has collaborated and partnered with numerous science and education providers in the Bay Area including: CA Academy of Sciences, SEP/UCSF, Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary, UC Museum of Paleontology, SF-ROCKS and SFCESS.  

Dawn is committed to providing all students in San Francisco the opportunity to question, investigate, creatively design, and provide solutions to current scientific issues. Having incorporated the use of Interactive Notebooks into her science classes, Dawn is skilled in strategies used to increase writing in science, providing students with multimodal learning opportunities, and engagement in inquiry-based science. 

David Barrios

High School Science Content Specialist

David is a National Board certified teacher who joined the STEM team after 20 years in the classroom, 19 of them in SFUSD at Galileo Academy of Science & Technology. He has taught 9th grade integrated science, chemistry, AVID core, and physics. He is an Exploratorium Teacher Institute alumnus and now a mentor to beginning science teachers. As the science chair at Galileo, he facilitated department and school-wide professional development in mastery learning, Common Core integration, equitable grading practices, NGSS, and lesson differentiation to make content accessible and rigorous for all students. 

In his 20 years as a teacher, David has developed his interest and skills in supporting ELs in science, thinking about how to support students with special needs, and providing all students access to engaging and rigorous science content. David has been a member of the district NGSS R&D group where he has worked to develop the scope and sequence, common learning experiences, and curriculum alignment with SFUSD’s vision. He is looking forward to helping teachers across the district to implement the NGSS standards for all students.

Katrina Rotter

High School Science Content Specialist

Katrina is a National Board certified teacher who joined the STEM team after 12 years teaching chemistry at Lowell High School. She is an Exploratorium alumni, and now a Mentor to beginning science teachers. She is also a Teaching Fellow with the Trellis Foundation, helping to mentor beginning science teachers in their first 5 years of science teaching. During the summer, Katrina co-teaches a 2 week PD for chemistry teachers, ChemEx2 at Stanford University.

Katrina has been a member of the district NGSS R&D group, working to develop the scope and sequence, common learning experiences and aligning curriculum to SFUSD’s vision. She’s looking forward to helping teachers across the district to implement the NGSS standards for all students.
