Dear MLK Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to let you know about an incident that occurred after school on Friday, 2/16, in front of our school on Girard St. The incident involved an altercation among several students and adults who are affiliated with our school community (not staff). SFPD was called to assist in de-escalating the situation. 

This incident was disruptive and stressful for students, staff, and parents. The incident was also filmed by students that witnessed it. We are urging students not to post any videos online as we know this is an upsetting situation.

The safety of our students, families and staff is our highest priority. We expect our school to be a place of love, learning, and a refuge from violence and fear. The incident that happened on Friday after school goes against what our school stands for, and cannot be shrugged off as “normal” or be tolerated. 

MLK is working directly with impacted students and families to provide support and to ensure a plan for safety moving forward. As you know, we work to create a safe and welcoming school environment for everyone. We have and will continue to follow the appropriate protocols per the SFUSD Student and Family Handbook. 

Please understand that this incident is under investigation, so further details of the incident cannot be shared at this time. MLK has security measures to ensure the well-being of students and staff. If an emergency were to occur at school, we would notify parents as quickly as possible using a variety of means including text, email and phone call. In order to receive urgent messages in as many ways as possible, we must have your current contact information on file. Update your information on ParentVUE. 

We will hold space for students during Advisory on Tuesday morning to talk about what happened, and share ideas for actions that we can take as a community to heal from the incident and to prevent things like this from happening in the future.

Estimados Padres de Familia y Tutores Legales de MLK:

Le escribimos para informarle sobre un incidente que ocurrió después de la escuela el día viernes 16 de febrero, frente a nuestra escuela en Girard St. El incidente involucró un altercado entre varios estudiantes y adultos afiliados a nuestra comunidad escolar (no al personal). ). Se llamó al SFPD para ayudar a aliviar la situación.

Este incidente fue perturbador y estresante para los estudiantes, el personal docente y los padres de familia. El incidente también fue filmado por estudiantes que lo presenciaron. Instamos a los estudiantes a no publicar ningún video en línea porque sabemos que esta es una situación perturbadora.

La seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal docente es nuestra máxima prioridad.
