Dance

The Dance Department offers rigorous coursework in ballet, modern, jazz, blues, and other contemporary styles of dance, as well as training in choreography and composition. Students learn to combine strong technique with a sense of artistry.

DANCE AUDITION - Please note that the dance audition is offered 1 day only, Feb. 1, 2020. Dancers do not have the option of signing up for an additional date.

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS

HOW WILL YOU PREPARE FOR THE DANCE AUDITION?

Applicants must prepare and rehearse a solo dance (a dance for one) in any style, about 1.5 minutes long. The importance of rehearsing your solo can not be overstated. A music file downloaded on an MP3, IPOD or phone must be used.  An auxiliary cord will be available. 

WHAT WILL YOU DO DURING THE DANCE AUDITION?

  • a group class: barre, center floor work and short combinations across the floor.  Styles include contemporary ballet, modern, and jazz.
  • solo choreography (1 minute 30 seconds in any style)
  • a written questionnaire: students discuss previous training and why they want to become a member of the Dance Department.

WHAT WILL YOU WEAR DURING THE DANCE AUDITION?

Girls:  leotard and tights of any color; ballet slippers, jazz shoes, dance paws, socks, or bare feet

Boys:  leotard or tight-fitting tee shirt and tights or mid-thigh shorts; ballet or jazz shoes, socks, or bare feet

NO sweats, leg warmers or baggy clothes.

WHAT FACTORS ARE CONSIDERED BY THE DANCE JUDGES?

Flexibility, coordination, presentation, musicality, and the ability to follow the directions, demonstrations during class, along with the solo presentation will be factors used to consider the applicant for acceptance.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE LATE FOR THE AUDITION?

Latecomers will not be admitted for the dance audition.

Students will be evaluated on the Dance audition elements, group class, solo performance, and enthusiasm for this field. Evaluation criteria for Dance is based on California State Visual and Performing Arts standards.
