Technical Theater

The Technical Theater Department offers project based, student-centered learning, in two distinct strands, STAGE CRAFT and COSTUME + FASHION DESIGN.  Both programs are supported by artists-in-residence and theater professionals and offer distinct curriculum.

  • STAGECRAFT includes: scene design, construction, and painting, theatrical lighting design and application, sound design, mixing, and application, prop design and fabrication, shop safety, theater terminology, drawing and sketching for design rendering, color theory and painting technique, technical lettering for design presentation, historical research skills, portfolio building and review, professional Internships, and time and project management.
  • COSTUME + FASHION DESIGN includes: costume design and construction, pattern making, hair and makeup design, basic drawing and sketching, color theory and painting technique, historical research skills, professional Internships, time and project management.

The Technical Theater department supports the technical needs of performances and events produced during the academic year. Tech students collaborate with the other arts departments on more than 50 productions. Students are encouraged to explore and develop their skills in all aspects of theatrical production in a creative and unique learning environment. 

    Application and Audition Instructions for TECHNICAL THEATER - STAGECRAFT

    WHAT WILL YOU PREPARE AT HOME AND TURN IN WITH YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS?

    Stagecraft Portfolio

    WHAT WILL YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR STAGECRAFT PORTFOLIO?

    • drawings (3 total, on 8 ½” x 11” paper)  One (1) two-point perspective (use pencil) - examples can be found on internet, (1) landscape - interior or exterior (use color pencil, water color, crayon or acrylics), (1) still life - three or more objects grouped together (use color pencil, water color, crayon, or acrylic).
    • shoe box project  Build a 3-D set, scene, or art sculpture inside a shoe box (regular size, no boot or other boxes, box top must close completely). Be inventive, thrifty, and imaginative (avoid store bought objects). No battery operated items. Make sure all objects are firmly glued or attached. For best results, research, experiment, practice, and give yourself enough time.

    Clearly label your portfolio (drawings and shoe box) with your name and the strand of Technical Theater you are applying to (Stagecraft). Portfolios will be returned audition day.

    WHAT WILL YOU DO DURING THE TECHNICAL THEATER - STAGECRAFT  AUDITION?

    • draw
    • take a skills, tools, and measurements assessment
    • participate in a group project
    • discuss your portfolio, prior experience, personal ambition, and program expectation

    Students will be evaluated on the quality of the Technical Theater portfolio, audition elements, and enthusiasm for this field. 

     

    Application and Audition Instructions for TECHNICAL THEATER - COSTUME + FASHION DESIGN

    WHAT WILL YOU PREPARE AT HOME AND TURN IN WITH YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS?

    Costume + Fashion Design Portfolio

    WHAT WILL YOU INCLUDE IN YOUR COSTUME + FASHION DESIGN PORTFOLIO? 

    • costume drawings (5 total, on 8 ½” x 11” paper) All drawings must be original designs (in any medium). optional: drawings may be mounted on poster board with fabric/trim swatches and include photographs of original costume or sewing projects.
    • shoe box project  Build a 3-D set, scene, or art sculpture inside a shoe box (regular size, no boot or other boxes, box top must close completely). Be inventive, thrifty, and imaginative (avoid store bought objects). Make sure all objects are firmly glued or attached. For best results, research, experiment, practice, and give yourself enough time.
