Applying to Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA)
Students who apply to Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA) must complete two applications:
- the SOTA application and portfolio materials due by December 13, 2019 at 3 p.m. to the SOTA Main Office; and
- the SFUSD general application due by January 17, 2020 to the Educational Placement Center (SOTA should be listed on the SFUSD general application in the order of preference).
The SOTA application is available online and the SFUSD application will be mailed to eighth graders at their homes in October 2019.
Questions about the auditions or portfolio materials should be directed to the school at 415-695-5700 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
What’s the SOTA selection process?
Students who have qualified by audition and list SOTA as their first choice school will receive an assignment offer to SOTA. Those who have qualified, but list another school as a higher choice than SOTA, will go into the assignment process for their higher choices. If they receive a placement into a higher choice school, he/she will not receive an offer to SOTA but to the higher choice school. If a qualified student does not receive a higher requested school, they will be assigned to SOTA. Because of the student assignment process, it’s important that students list schools by preference. Students who do not qualify for SOTA will not be negatively impacted for their other school choices, and will be included in the assignment process for all the other choices listed on their applications.
Admission to SOTA is solely based on audition outcomes. There is no waiting pool or appeal process for SOTA.
Admission to SOTA is limited to students who reside in San Francisco only. Residents who subsequently move out of the district will not be allowed an interdistrict permit to continue.
