School Closure Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Last updated May 22, 2020
How long will SFUSD schools be closed?
SFUSD school sites will remain closed through the end of the school year (June 2, 2020). Instruction will be delivered to every student through interactive teacher-led learning starting April 13.
When will the 2020-21 school year begin?
Fall semester learning will begin starting August 17.
Will school buildings reopen in the fall, or will distance learning continue?
We are still in the process of planning what learning will look like in the fall. Given current guidance from public health and education officials, we are considering a variety of approaches and scenarios, all of which will require major changes in how we deliver instruction in order to minimize health risks for our students and staff and their families. As we plan what the next semester will look like, we will be involving our employees and families.
What are considerations for reopening school buildings?
Our focus is on providing equitable access to learning while also prioritizing the safety of students, staff and families.
We will likely need to maintain physical distancing, which will mean reconfiguring our classrooms and schedules. We will likely need new procedures for cleaning schools and access to a steady supply chain of materials like soap, hand sanitizer and masks. We will need to consider guidelines for sports, equipment cleaning protocols, and food distribution practices, among other things.
We have a policy team that is working on a reopening schools plan. We have to consider different scenarios including:
- School begins on time and remains open
- School begins on time and closes due to a second wave of COVID-19
- School opening is delayed
