Group Roles

Collaborative groups benefit from clear roles for their members. Each role should have intellectually meaningful tasks or behaviors to do that support the learning of the group. They may also be given sentence frames or questions to pose to their group. The tasks and questions can be modified to fit the particular work of the day. Group Roles can be a focus of Participation Quizzes or Groupwork Feedback.

Sample group roles for different grade bands are described in the Math Teaching Toolkit.

This article from Edutopia describes how the intentional use of roles can support equitable collaborative learning.
