A Closer Look at DHH
The Deaf/Hard of Hearing students range from 9th-12th grade (4 freshman, 3 sophomore, 2 juniors, and 1 senior)
They are a dynamic group of people coming from both similar and different language backgrounds and programs. Some identify as Deaf, some Hard of Hearing, and some may be new to a DHH program and the DHH community and may not identify as either, yet.
Some use sign language to access language, communication, and curriculum and some use auditory means. Some use both.
Some will use spoken English if they are able or more importantly, choose to, and others will only speak English.
Some use technology like hearing aids and some don't. Some use interpreters for support while others do not at this point but may discover as they learn sign language that they benefit from interpreting services.
The important thing to remember is that just like our hearing students, Deaf/Hard of Hearing students are individuals who each have unique personalities, situations, and needs and while they may all be in the same program, they are by no means the same.
