Peabody ES Our School

Our School

George Peabody is a small, safe, and successful elementary school located in San Francisco's Inner Richmond neighborhood. The school has a small-town family feel, yet serves a diverse community of students that reflects our multicultural city. View our online brochure.

Our experienced and talented staff provides each student with meaningful learning experiences through purposeful instruction and a well-articulated curriculum.

We work to ensure that all students learn the skills and knowledge needed to build the foundation to lead successful lives and become productive citizens. We also strive to ensure that every student leaves George Peabody with a positive elementary school experience full of fond memories, close friendships, a love of learning and a curiosity of the world beyond San Francisco.

Kindergarten Program

Peabody has two kindergarten classes taught by teachers with a total 30 years of teaching experience. The teachers plan together to ensure that both classes cover the same curriculum. Each teacher brings her unique personality and special skills to the classroom, however, the curriculum covered is the same.

Computer Technology

All students have access to networked classroom computers. The school has a technology committee to ensure that the computers and associated equipment are maintained, the proper software is in place, and technology skills are taught at appropriate levels.

Music and Art

At George Peabody we have an articulated arts curriculum from kindergarten through the fifth grade. During the first semester students in grades K through 4 receive weekly music instruction from our musician-in-residence, which culminates in a schoolwide performance in December. The second semester involves working with the Performing Arts Workshop and an independent artist-in-residence; a 16-week experience.

In K and 1st grade, students focus on dance and movement. In second and third grade, the focus shifts to visual arts. Fourth and fifth graders focus on the performing arts. Outside consultants are hired to teach our arts curriculum, however classroom teachers undertake art projects in each of their classes to compliment and build upon the arts curriculum.

In addition, our second and third grade students participate in the Dance in Schools and Communities program offered by the San Francisco Ballet. Fourth and fifth grade students are provided with choral and instrumental instruction by a school district-provided music teacher on a weekly basis.

Library

A professional librarian and volunteers manage our library. Students make weekly visits to our well-maintained school library. The library is open after school on the days our librarian is with us.

After-School Program

Our on site provider is working on getting fully staffed. Staffing for aftercare is a city wide issue. Our program intends to enroll about 120 students once they are fully staffed.. If you have not applied for the program you may do so at https://richmondsf.org/youth/elementary/

Another option, Booker T Community Center https://btwcsc.org/nurture/ (program info)  https://forms.gle/uqUpFFj9KFLDtmPc8 (registration link), still has a few spaces.

Parent Involvement

Parents are our students' first teachers and play a vital role at our school. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meets monthly to plan for school-wide events, fundraisers, after-school programs, and to help coordinate parent volunteer efforts at our school. Parent volunteers assist in classrooms, the school office, the library, and the schoolyard during lunch recess. Parents are an integral part of the Peabody community.

Community Partnerships

George Peabody is a beneficiary of the federally funded America Reads Program. Specially trained University of San Francisco Students provided over 50 hours a week of in-class literacy support in the primary grades. The Jewish Coalition for Literacy works with our targeted students to provide literacy tutoring. In addition, we have received donations from the GAP Foundation, Levi Strauss, The Junior League of San Francisco, the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Park Hyatt Hotel, and local area merchants.
