Lesson Study at John Muir

At John Muir Elementary, we believe that great teaching is built through collaboration, reflection, and a commitment to continuous learning. Since 2015, our teachers have engaged in a professional learning process called Lesson Study to strengthen instruction and improve outcomes for all students.
Lesson Study is based on a simple idea: if we want to improve teaching, one of the most powerful things educators can do is work together. Through this process, teachers bring real questions and challenges from their classrooms and partner with colleagues to explore solutions. They draw on one another's expertise, educational research, outside specialists, and, most importantly, careful observation of student learning.
Teacher teams participate in ongoing cycles of study, plan, teach, and reflect. Together, they design lessons with specific learning goals in mind, observe how students respond to instruction, and reflect on what was most effective. By closely examining student thinking, teachers gain valuable insights that help them refine their practice and better meet the needs of every learner.
Lesson Study also keeps us focused on our broader vision for students. Beyond mastering academic standards, we want our children to become confident thinkers, curious problem-solvers, effective communicators, and collaborative members of our community. Through this ongoing work, our teachers continually learn from one another so they can provide engaging, responsive, and meaningful learning experiences for all students.
For families, Lesson Study means that our teachers are continually learning, growing, and improving. It reflects our belief that every student deserves engaging, effective instruction and that the best way to achieve this is through collaboration, curiosity, and a shared commitment to student success.
What Our Teachers Say
"One of the most powerful parts of Lesson Study is observing students closely. We pay attention to how children approach a problem, the strategies they use, and the questions they ask. Those observations help us understand not just what students are learning, but how they are learning."
— John Muir Teacher
"I appreciate that Lesson Study is teacher-led and grounded in our own classrooms. We're not implementing someone else's ideas—we're testing, refining, and improving practices based on the students sitting right in front of us."
