Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Transitional Kindergarten

Serving as a bridge between PreK and Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten (TK) curriculum includes content from both the California Preschool Learning Foundations and the Kindergarten Common Core Standards. That means students are given ample time to learn naturally through open-ended play and discovery. But, we also work to build up their abilities to succeed in a more structured environment like what they will encounter in Kindergarten.

In literacy, we begin the year practicing letters and their sounds, and link to concepts about print and reading comprehension. When students are ready, we add in sight words and gradually make the leap to independent reading and writing, applying the knowledge of letters and sounds students mastered earlier in the year. These objectives are accomplished using methods designed to support each and every student’s needs including those of English Learners.

In math, we cover foundational concepts like classification, patterning, geometry, and number sense. We eventually begin simple arithmetic. Social-emotional growth is purposefully supported through a unique curriculum called “Kimochis” throughout the entire year. One of the best things about TK is the amount of time we are able to spend on social-emotional learning, and the flexibility to personalize curriculum for the needs and interests of all students. Over the course of the school year, students build confidence, meaningful relationships, and a strong sense of community.

In addition, our TK academic enrichment includes weekly lessons from talented teachers coming from the district’s Visual and Performing Arts Program. These can include music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Children eligible for TK have a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow in this unique grade level.
