Nestled in the heart of San Francisco's Lower Pacific Heights for nearly 100 years, Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary School is a small, inclusive, and multi-generational community that fosters the inherent potential within each child. Named after the first African-American principal in the San Francisco School District, Dr. William L. Cobb School provides a strong academic program for its students that focuses on the rigor and joy of learning.
We offer many significant advantages for students and families, including small class sizes that assure not a single child falls through the cracks, ample amounts of technology for students, a stunning and renovated school building with easy access to public transportation, and a large playground and school garden. Our dedicated teachers, support staff and volunteers have a shared vision and put our students first. Students feel they belong at Cobb, and their intellectual, social, and emotional development shows it.
The mission of Cobb Elementary is to provide a nurturing environment that inspires each student to thrive academically, emotionally, socially, intellectually, and creatively so that each student can be empowered to achieve his or her highest potential. As we deepen our focus on equity, we achieve this mission by getting to know each child individually, building relational trust between the student and our school, creating a positive school climate, providing culturally relevant and cutting-edge teaching and learning, collaborating strategically with community organizations, and meaningfully engaging with families as partners. We value the connection between school and home as the most important part of our school culture.
Our students have extensive opportunities to be engaged in the arts and celebrate their individuality through song, dance, drama, instrumental music, and visual art. The staff and overall Cobb community strive to provide a safe and caring learning environment that promotes culturally sensitive pedagogy and critical-thinking skills through school-wide curriculum projects, full implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Response to Intervention (RtI), Restorative Practices, and a strong and free after school YMCA/ExCel program.
To support our students, we have strong partnerships with a number of art, sports, and volunteer organizations, as well as several local high schools. We welcome you to be a part of our tradition of learning, dating back to the 1920s in the Western Addition and Pacific Heights community.
