Dear Jefferson Families,
I hope your summer was filled with rest, adventure, and moments that sparked excitement for learning. Our staff has been busy meeting in teams, preparing classrooms, and creating welcoming spaces so every student can start the year with excitement and confidence. We look forward to greeting new Jaguars and reconnecting with returning students on Monday, August 18th. If you are receiving this ParentSquare post, you should be able to see your child's classroom assignment and teacher.
Placements are the result of a thoughtful process by teachers and staff, balancing academic needs, learning styles, and social connections. We are confident your child will have a positive and supportive experience.
Important reminders for the start of school:
- Emergency Cards – Complete your child’s online emergency card in ParentVue before school begins. A paper copy will also be sent home to return on the first day.
- Health Forms – If your child has allergies or a medical condition, complete the SFUSD Health Information Form and return it to the office or teacher. For any medications during the school day, please have your doctor complete the Medication Form.
- Reporting Absences – Absences can and should be entered directly in ParentVue as soon as you know that your child will be absent.—no phone call needed. [Link to instructions]
- Drop-Off Zones – The white zone along 18th Avenue has been repainted and extended to improve safety, for our bus riders. Do not block these areas and follow posted times and guidelines to keep drop-off safe and efficient. Sign-up to volunteer for Stop, Drop, and Go when it's your class's turn.
- New Recess Yards & Play Structures – Both the lower and upper yards will be completed by the first day of school due to the nearly completed 4 million-dollar bond projects! Children will enjoy new play structures, planted areas, trees, shaded seating, safer play surfaces, improved fencing and entryways, and much more. We will also use this time to recommit ourselves to the stewardship of clean and well-maintained yard, cafeteria, and shared spaces.
- Upper Yard Line-Up Changes – Due to the new upper yard design, class line-up locations have shifted. On the first day, students should look for their teacher’s sign to find their line. If you do not yet know your child’s teacher, staff with class lists will be available to help.
- Reading Intervention Changes – SFUSD has closed all Reading Interventionist (ARTIF) positions for at least this school year. With support from our PTA, we are opening a new position to provide additional reading services for your students who need the extra boost in reading. Fortunately, our long-time Reading Interventionist will remain at Jefferson as a second grade teacher.
School-wide Expectations
At Jefferson, our rules are simple and intentional: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. Please talk with your child about what these mean in the classroom, on the yard, and in our community. Lessons during the first weeks of school will reinforce the rules as well as our Jefferson values.
First-Day Reminders
- Breakfast is available for any student at 7:30 AM.
- The morning bell rings at 7:47 and students should be in line by 7:50 AM—help your child build positive school habits by arriving on time. Dismissal is at 2:05 PM except for Wednesdays when students are dismissed at 12:50 PM.
- If your child has ANY medical or personal need please report that to your child's teacher, the office, me, or Ms. Trisha.
- There is a short delay with the installation of the new fence on Irving Street. Therefore, Kindergarteners will go to the upper yard for morning announcements at 7:50 AM and for pick-up at dismissal. Additional details will come from the classroom teachers.
