f your Grades 1 & 2 Chromebooks are stored in a cart, and they take several minutes to start up, you can eliminate the long wait time by taking these three steps:
- Number the Chromebooks, using labels or masking tape.
- Assign each Chromebook to a single student for the rest of the year.
- Make sure you or your students log into their Chromebook with their Clever badge.
This Chromebook assignments chart can help everyone in your class remember which student gets which device. (To make your own copy of the chart, click the “Use Template” button at the top-right of the screen. A copy will be stored in your Google Drive).
Your students’ first login to their newly assigned device may take up to seven minutes, but there should be no long start-up times after that, except when the Chromebook installs an occasional update. This is a great opportunity to do a 10 minute activity once students have logged into their Chromebooks, while software is being loaded. This could happen immediately before a natural break in the day such as recess; in addition, here are some offerings of 10 minute activities that support mathematics.
- Do a Read Aloud or Shared Reading Activity
- Gr 1 Math Talks Bank; Gr 1 Math Learning Stations Bank
- Gr 2 Math Talks Bank; Gr 2 Math Learning Stations Bank
Why this is needed: recent changes to the Chrome operating system have resulted in a much longer startup time – up to several minutes – the first time a student logs into any particular device. These changes are expected to last indefinitely. So the Department of Technology recommends that teachers assign a specific device to each student for the entire school year, even if those devices are stored in carts shared by several classrooms. If a student uses the same device all year, only that first login to the device will take a long time, as the device loads the student’s profile. Periodically, the device will also require extra time during startup to automatically install software updates.
