About Lawton Alternative School

Lawton Alternative School is a citywide TK–8 public school serving students from across San Francisco. Unlike neighborhood schools, Lawton welcomes families from every part of the city using the SFUSD lottery system. About half of our students live in the 94122 zip code, while the other half represent communities throughout San Francisco.

Our school is built on a strong sense of community. Because many students attend Lawton from kindergarten through eighth grade, they develop lasting friendships and meaningful relationships with classmates and staff. While we are not immune to the challenges that come with technology and social media, our TK–8 model fosters a culture of mentorship and responsibility. Older students serve as positive role models for younger students, while younger students look up to and learn from their older peers.

At Lawton, academic excellence is complemented by a strong emphasis on the visual and performing arts, character development, and positive behavior. Together, these experiences help students grow into confident, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals who are well prepared for high school and beyond.
