Overview
Sherman Elementary School, founded in 1892, is a K-5 CDE Distinguished Elementary School located in the Cow Hollow - Marina neighborhood of San Francisco. Sherman has long been recognized for its balanced focus on academic excellence, social emotional growth, and equitable access for our diverse community of learners. In our efforts to provide the optimum conditions for learning and growth of every child in our care, Sherman also offers a range of additional programs that foster academic, environmental, artistic, and technological enrichment.
Sherman has a strong sense of community and belonging thanks to our enduring partnerships with BACR’s Sharks Until Dark after-school program, and our dedicated and highly engaged Parent Teacher Association.
These partnerships enable us to provide a broad range of experiences and services to our students. Sherman’s large and thriving garden presents a living classroom in which students become scientists and environmentalists, and also serves as the setting for daily school-wide morning meetings. Our technology classes and newly-updated maker studio encourage engineering and invention. Our partnerships with VAPA and SF Arts programs foster artistic expression and build linkages to our standards based academics. Sherman’s PE and dance programs help students to build physical confidence and expression through movement.
Sherman was an early adopter of the Readers-Writers Workshop model. By the time our students reach middle school they have become self-aware readers and writers with a strong sense of their literacy identities. Our supplemental Literacy and Math coaches deliver state of the art on-site training and professional development for our staff and provide additional support for our students. And as experienced as they are, our teachers are dedicated to honing their craft by finding innovative ways to reach and teach every child. As a school, we have a strong equity focus and prioritize the ongoing work of implementing culturally responsive pedagogy and anti-racist practices.
We look forward to welcoming new families to our community and encourage you to contact us with questions and querie
