Principal Message

Dear Sutro Families,

We are now in the month of December.  The fall semester ends on the 18th and winter recess will begin on the 21st. This holiday season will be unlike any other we have experienced. We are being asked by our public officials to limit our travels and visits with our families to protect them and ourselves from catching COVID- 19.  We realize this can be quite stressful, so let’s remember the reason for the season is about giving and caring, and even though we might not be able to spend the quality time we would like in person together, there is hope that next year the pandemic will be over and we will be in a better position to be with our families and love ones. The most important thing for us now is to be safe, so for this holiday season, let's follow all the precautions and spend quality time with those in our immediate household. To all of our Sutro families, warmest holiday wishes and a prosperous new year!
See you in 2021!

Message from our Librarian Ms. Pearl:

Hi Families!

Need more books to read? The San Francisco Public Library has opened 14 locations for book pick-up. To check-out books, you must first request them online and select your pick-up location. SFPL will email you when your books are ready (it usually takes about a week). Click here for more information on how to request and pick-up books. All Sutro students have already been issued an SFPL library card, so this service is available for all families! If you have any questions or need any help, please email me monaghanj@sfusd.edu or SFPL at info@sfpl.org. Happy reading!

Ms. Pearl

Message from PTA President:

Season’s greetings Sutro families!

It's hard to believe 2020 will be closing out soon. It is an understatement to say how challenging and unprecedented this year has been but I remain optimistic for the upcoming year. This school year has looked vastly different than in the past but we will get back to meeting in person eventually. Stay well and please reach out the PTA (sutroPTA@gmail.com) if you have ideas or suggestions to build our community up. Sending you warm holiday wishes.

Message from Mr. Kirk:

Hi everyone!

In the last newsletter, I talked about how we are working to cultivate a growth mindset in our students this school year.

In addition to encouraging a growth mindset, we are also working to improve the self-efficacy of our students.  Self-efficacy is the belief that you can succeed in achieving an outcome or reaching a goal. Self-efficacy reflects confidence in your own ability to control or manage your motivation, behavior, and environment.  Students with high levels of self-efficacy are motivated in school and set higher and more challenging academic goals for themselves.  Here are a few tips for encouraging your child's self-efficacy:

1. Praise a child's effort when trying something challenging.

2. Praise honestly.  Do not provide empty praise ("You did great!) if a child fails at something.  Help them come up with a different way to approach the challenge.

3. Help children pick "just right" activities.  These are activities that a child is capable of doing, but that push the student and require effort.

Things to remember

  • All fifth-grade families please begin the application process for middle school now. The due date is Feb.5, 2021
  • Families, please welcome our new SSC members Sindy Molina De Castro and San San Duong.
  • The school renaming process will end on December 18, 2020. Our SSC chair will submit two names to the district. Please remember the district will have the final say on what names are chosen.

Please remember to exercise the body and mind during the break by trying some of the following activities:

  • Limit screen time as much as you can
  • Take walks every day when the weather permits
  • Meditate and take deep belly breaths at least 3 times a day
  • Read an exciting book
